Only “mischievous little elves” could produce music that would inspire grunge rock’s greatest icon, Kurt Cobain, to write Smells Like Teen Spirit. Cobain admitted in a January 1994 Rolling Stone interview that when writing the song he was actually attempting to copy the style of the Pixies.
“I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band— or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard.”
Heavy and loud guitar riffs screeching in a beautiful frenzy over fast intense drumbeats that move the soul are the stuff great rock is made of. And that is what the Pixies create. The raw emotion that this band conjures from the crowd is something to experience. And now you can. The Pixies will be playing three shows at the Hollywood Palladium from November 4-6 on their Doolittle Tour.
The Doolittle album was the Pixies second production release that garnered great U.S. and international success. With content raging from simple confessions of love like La La Love you to descriptions of death and despair held in Wave of Mutilation and Monkey Gone to Heaven, this album could definitely make you want cuddle up with your significant other and then fuck some serious shit up within the span of 39 minutes. Many of us were never privileged enough to see Nirvana but we can still the unsung heroes who inspired them and other groups like the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s and Weezer to create the crack our ears so desperately need another fix of.
Tickets start @ $50.
