I’m always looking for new feature opportunities, and I think I’ve found one that y’all will like. Our Music Video Round Up has a fairly self-explanatory name. It’s a collection of newly released music videos worth checking out. Down below are five intriguing new music videos and my brief thoughts on each one. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment section or send me an @ reply on Twitter.
Ferraby Lionheart – Harry And Bess
Directed by Focus Creeps, this video sees Rainn Wilson of The Office in various states of undress. Wilson dances around Lionheart, while the singer-songwriter struggles to craft lyrics. There is a distinct use of lighting in some of the early shots, and again at the end, which give the video an ethereal quality. The song itself centers around Harry Houdini and his wife Bess, who notoriously slipped Harry the key to his handcuffs by kissing him.
Eminem feat. Rihanna – Love The Way You Lie
As someone who disliked Relapse immensely, I didn’t have high hopes for Recovery. And, that turned out to be a good thing, as the album was pretty much a dud. Filled with retreaded lyrics and uninspired production, the album left a lot to be desired. “Love The Way You Lie” was one of the few standout cuts from Recovery but it irked me to hear Rihanna singing a chorus that seems to suggest spousal abuse is acceptable. For the video Em enlists Lost’s Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox to play the couple he’s rapping about in his verses. There is a distinct cinematic quality to the video due in large part to veteran director Joe Kahn. Side note: Do you remember when Rihanna was attractive? Back when she did the “Shut Up And Drive” video, I was thoroughly impressed. Now, not so much.
Jonsi – Animal Arithmetic
“Animal Arithmetic” is the second single off of Jonsi’s recently released debut album Go. Most commonly known as the lead singer of Sigur Ros, Jonsi and director Dean Deblois capture the wild abandon of summer within this 3:21 minute clip. The video cuts between a birthday party complete with fireworks and close ups of instruments, allowing the jubilant song to act as a soundtrack of sorts.
Samuel – I Heart NY
The video for Samuel’s “I Heart NY” could have gone in a bunch of different directions, but Samuel chooses to keep it fairly simple. The beginning shows the singer working as a garbage man, which allows the director to showcase several prominent locations in and around NYC. The track’s refrain of da-da-das are lip-synced in the video by Samuel’s friends and family, including his mom.
Kanye West – Power
Those of you who follow Mr. West on Twitter are probably familiar with the fact that Kanye considers this video a painting in motion rather a music video. Yet, I’ve decided to include it in my roundup. I think “Power” is a dope track and I was hoping to love the video just as much. But, alas, no. I can appreciate what Yeezy was going for with this one but it doesn’t live up to the track.
