1. Yeasayer – Madder Red

About a week ago, Adam posted the new MGMT video for their track “Congratulations.” But, shortly before MGMT unveiled their video, Yeasayer dropped Madder Red. Why is that pertinent? Well, mostly because they have similar plots (both involve sick monsters). Having said that, Yeasayer’s video is better executed and it features Kristen Bell, whom I’m willing to watch do just about anything.

2. Drake feat. Lil Wayne – Miss Me

When Thank Me Later was released in mid June, Drake mentioned that “Unforgettable” would be the album’s third single. That plan went out the window when radio latched onto “Miss Me.” I wasn’t sure how the video for “Miss Me” would turn out since Wayne makes up about half the song, and he’s still incarcerated. But, director Anthony Mandler does some really cool things with footage that Wayne supposedly shot before his prison stay began.

3. Riva Starr feat. Noze – I Was Drunk

I stumbled upon this video thanks to our friends over at Daily Tunez. Apparently, the song is a huge hit over in Europe right now. It doesn’t really seem like something that would play here in American clubs, but the video is all kinds of awesome. Rather than explain it, I’ll simply suggest that you watch.

4. Cee-Lo – Fuck You

It seems like this song has been everywhere but the radio lately, and that’s simply because of it’s chorus. With most major news outlets touting the song, it was only a matter of time before Cee-Lo released a video to accompany the track. Rather than overdoing it, Cee-Lo lets the song speak for itself here.

5. Jason Reeves – Helium Hearts

Jason’s music is little bit different than what we typically feature here at Newestra, but he’s one of the most talented songwriters of our generation. “Helium Hearts” is the lead single from his forthcoming album. The video, like the song itself, is about love in its purest form.

Zoo York Mixtape Volume 1 has reemerged recently via Vimeo, compliments of blogger T.R.O.Y. Serious Freestyle Sessions all around in this classic video that’s become somewhat of an ancient scroll in New York City Skate and Hip Hop culture.

Filmed in ’97, released in ’98. Although this video has been available online for some time, both streaming and for download, the downloadable version has until now, been incomplete.

RETNA and El MAC recently collaborated on yet another mural. Their newest mural, titled Of Our Youth, can be seen on the side of Graphaids Art Supply Store, on La Cienega in Los Angeles is the subject of this new video.

The imagery and text used in this mural was inspired by their time spent at Skid Row, while painting their previous mural. The artists met a man by the name of Ralph Woodruff aka Chato and were inspired by his past hardships, experiences, and overall outlook on life. His ability to recognize past mistakes was something that resonated with RETNA.

The text which reads, “So today I’m trying to change a few things to rectify the situation of my past. So today I’m looking towards the future (of our youth highlighted)” is a quote taken from their conversation.

It’s been a minute since I checked in with the DJ battle scene. There’s been some commotion about a battle that has been taking place recently so I decided to pay the much talked about Beezo Battle a visit. I was impressed with the talent that was in attendance and was entertained for the duration of the night but I did notice a lot of the tricks and routines were still at the same skill level and musicality as they were back in my day. That is until DJ Bandoma (went by Massacre in the 90’s) laid down his set. I was blown away by the composition of his routine but not only that… I noticed something that I have never scene before in a DJ battle. He hooked up a midi controller to the turntables/Serato and played notes and rocked some drum patterns while moving flawlessly through his set.

I interviewed him afterwards and asked when the next battle was. He said he was going to “focus more on making his own music and production”. I could only hope he continues to bless the turntablist scene with his refreshing sound but whatever he plans to do, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a collaboration with him and the Newestra fam soon. Peep out his set.

The New York liquid swordsman is invading Los Angeles tonight and we are in there like swimwear!

As the members of the Wu-Tang Clan enter their 40s, that old line about old(er) dogs and new tricks seems less and less relevant. Take GZA, who got his start rapping at Brooklyn block parties in the mid-’80s. The crucial Wu Clansman released a bona fide classic in 1995, Liquid Swords, and followed it up with a series of solid albums and guest spots that consistently qualified his title within the crew as “The Genius,” a lyricist whose every couplet displays a serious mastery of street smarts and poetic device — exactly the kind of thing that makes for great crossover appeal. GZA has been smart enough not to change up his winning style, but he’s also proved his savvy in reaching out to his more rock-oriented fans — hipsters, specifically — not only performing Liquid Swords from beginning to end at Pitchfork’s 2007 festival, but collaborating with garage punks Black Lips last year. But the Genius in Echo Park? That’s both a surprise and a New Year’s gift.

As usual, the band symbolizes a deeper abstract meaning than actually pictured. Enjoy.

I know most of you haven’t heard about this kid out of Norway called Aniki (real name Helge Teigen Hansen), who can simultaneously rock your ass to Russia with one beat of bass from any of these gems below. Definitely a big come up for any DJ out there looking to set the roof on fire! You won’t mind purchasing any of his music here on Beatport, because all the tracks are that good and club ready! Not only does he produce some hard disco but also makes some bad ass electro/drum and bass/techno stuff too. He’s been getting down on the salcious sound tip since he was 13 so there is pretty much nothing he hasn’t heard or done already. It’s all just perfecting perfection (if that makes any sense, ha!).

So what is all this Nu Disco craze we’ve been hearing about lately. Is it Electro, French House, Euro Disco…? In short, Nu Disco seems to have stemmed out of all of these genre’s of dance music and combines the sound of 70’s and 80’s disco music as well. Rather than trying to define this branch of dance music that seems to have become apparent somewhere in 2009, we’re just going to give you a taste of all the illest DJs/Producers that have been running the Nu Disco seen since its recent conception. We went over Louis La Roche awhile back and now it’s time to move on to Cassian from Sydney, Australia.

Nu Disco is contagious. You can’t help but move to it. I remember doing a gig with La Muerte awhile back and I couldn’t help but notice the crowd response. La Muerte is far from a top 40 DJ but I can tell you, he had a top 40 crowd going nuts to the Nu Disco tracks he was playing. Coming from a DJs perspective we love it because it works every time.  You can be spinning just about anywhere and this stuff hits.  Anyhow, here are a couple of gems and an hour long mix from Cassian, who can be considered a pioneer in Nu Disco music.  Hope you all enjoy!

WALLPAPER:: Partway through recording his debut LP as Wallpaper. Eric Frederic lost his shit. The Oakland artist was neck-deep in a series of isolated studio all-nighters to put him in the mood, when the song “Doodoo Face” pushed him into the beyond. Boxed in by layers of percussive funk, dark synthesizer blurt and crushing bass, Frederic lost himself inside of Ricky Reed, the character he’d long ago conceived as Wallpaper’s front man. He gave in to Ricky’s rampant narcissism, love for party and supreme indifference, and as a result, discovered the guiding duality behind Doodoo Face, the album: There’s sadness inside all that celebration….a little madness too. But one needn’t know any of this to “get” Wallpaper. Is it satire? Sincerity? Something in between? Doodoo Face invites you to decide.

This highly anticipated EDM documentary from director Stephen Alex Vasquez explores the past, present, and future of electronic/dance music. The Electro Wars captures the perspective of the electro scene as told through the eyes and ears of the artists that are helping to define it. The film features unique footage right from the frontlines and includes in depth interviews with artists such as A-Trak, Moby, Justice, Boys Noize, Spank Rock, Diplo & Switch, Franki Chan, DJ Premier, Midnight Juggernauts and many more.

We been following this for sometime now, looking forward to what was made of all that crazy electro road footage Vasquez compiled. Listening to the philosophies on electronic music from the mouths of artist’s that make it. What is Blog House? This should be fun and interesting, to say the least. I’m quite sure you’ll be hearing bangers the whole movie too! Indie documentaries rock, no boundaries. I think they’re about to awaken a sleeping giant, you heard it here first yo!
