Another installment in the long and fruitful combination between beautiful women and sparse clothing, a partnership that’s been winning hearts and minds for centuries, is street-wear brand Mishka’s upcoming supplementary Spring 2012 Lookbook shot by Rae Threat and Kimberly Kane. They’ve employed the talented Ms. Threat before, most recently for their Fall 2011 shoot featuring Andy San Dimas and Jessie Andrews.

This time it’s got more girls, more locations, and – of course – more guns. Rae and compatriot Kimberly Kane rounded up the one and only “Level 70 Deep Throat Wizard” Belladonna, blonde bombshell Charlotte Stokely, the gorgeous Gracie Glam, and last but not least, Aiden Ashley and got them into (and out of) some of the best Spring 2012 items.

A couple nights ago LoPro and I came across these gems on some random kids Twitter. Believing and now confirming that they are a limited custom sneaker – we are happy to share the details of who, what, where & when…

Dave White and Michael Jordan are back at it again, and this time the result is the Air Jordan 1 High DW. The sneaker features the iconic Jordan black/sport red-white-cement grey colorway, and even bring in the elephant print on the forefoot laces-strap.

White actually created four design options for this shoe, each implementing expressive elements. While eye-catching from the jump, White thinks that it’s the detail is where it’s at at what sneakerheads will appreciate most.

Do you know the feeling of looking in your closet full of (awesome) clothes and suddenly not liking any of it? Well that’s the feeling I have with my autumn closet. Last year I was wearing black in combination with more black, leather, all day every day but it just doesn’t feel right this year. I want to be able to wear bare legs and lots of white!! Dresses, skirts, shorts with heels…, yeah lovely. But when it gets colder, rainy, grey, and later on snowy I’m forced to leave all those wonderful items in the closet. And when the winter gets really bad, then you can only wear ugly shoes because of the persistent snow and layers on the layers of your layers to keep that body warm. And yes this is quit depressing but….. it also means a new challenge. Yeah I think you understand where I’m getting at. It’s time to change the depressing autumn/winter closet! This means renewing and restyling old pieces but (unfortunately for my wallet) also buying some new pieces. My first warm/winterish item was this blue sweater. I’ve actually always hated sweaters, I just can’t seem to feel feminine in it, but I think it should be possible.. Victoria (from: nyheter24.se/modette/victoriatornegren/) wears it all the time and looks quit sexy in it so I guess I just have to find the right way to pull it off. The black/white jacket on top is also new. Bought it as an anti-winter piece, ready for the next summer. Made an extra shot of my jewellery just because I love the rabbit ring so much. And I have to admit that I cannot leave the door without my YSL rings. I just saw a picture of some new YSL rings with some crazy colours, craving for them now of course.

The Microdot Collection, the newest series from the ongoing collaboration between PUMA and Undefeated. Feast your eyes on this fresh  new sneaker which up until now has focused entirely on the classic PUMA Clyde. The latest installment features both a Clyde and a the hi-top PUMA RS, both of which add a subtle dotted pattern over hi-quality suede. Released in black and grey the shoes will be available at select Footaction locations and other retailers beginning November 10th.

Q&A With Eddie Cruz:

Q. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the Microdots

A. Inspiration came from early 90’s fashion dress shirts. Besides, it’s time to start showing a little bit of whimsicalness with kicks going forward.

Q. This is the first time within this collection that you have included a style other than the Clyde, why did you choose the RS and how was it to work with another shoe?

A. The RS’s are a classic looking very timely kick. It’s what people want to wear – High Tops. We took a little piece of the Microdot Clyde and applied it to them. I think people will dig them.

Q. Do you plan to explore other styles in future drops? Or stick with the classic?

A. As of now, we plan to stick with the Clyde, although we have some experimental stuff coming up in 2012 with the Clyde. You’ll see.

Q. What design challenges did you run into with the Microdots?

None. PUMA got them right on the first go around.

Q. Can you tell us about the name Microdot? Does this have any sort of significance? Or Military inspiration like some of the previous names in the collection?

A. No, not at all. The name Microdot is also an exact description of what we did with this particular drop. I think they look quite sophisticated.

Q. How do you feel this shoe fits into trends our there in the market place right now?

A. You’ll start to see other brands adding fun elements to their kicks. The whole basic thing is almost over. You need a twist on it.

Q. This is the first time you have incorporated a pattern or print in the designs, is this something we will see more of?

A. Yes

Q. How do you feel this drop fits in with the past drops in the collection?

A. Well, it’s a Clyde with the same high quality tooling as the previous. Only difference is the pattern on the shoe. It’s important for us to stay consistent, but also flex a little bit of flavor to keep things new and fresh.

Stussy once again teams up with Nike with intentions to produce yet another timeless sneaker. This time they choose the Nike Sky Force 88 Mid model, and opt for four different colorways. Which colorways you ask? Well, first off there are camo versions of solid color leather sections with canvas camo print toe and side panels – with an all black colorway to complete the series. The Stussy SS Link logo has been embossed onto the tongue area, placed over the basketball of the classic Force Mid 88 logo. On Thursday evening of Febuary 24, 2011 Mr. Tom Ford opens his second flagship store in North America by way of Beverly Hills. Aside from the many celebrities in attendance, many of whom are personal friends of Mr. Ford, the big news of the night revolved around Tom Ford producing women’s wear once again. Since his departure from Yves Saint Laurent back in 2004 Ford has not produced any women’s wear, ironically being the source of his success while working for Gucci Group. Presented is a behind the scenes look at the making of SOPH.’s in house label – uniform experiment Spring/ Summer 2011 lookbook. The collection is called “England’s Dreaming” and highlights military-inspired outwear and drip cool accessories.

Iconic Japanese brand Bape has sold itself to Hong Kong’s public trade fashion conglomerate I.T for approx. $2,800,000 USD or 90.27%. In other words, I.T reportedly purchased a total of 668 shares of the company. Why such a small price for such the Japanese fashion brand? The Wall Street Journal is reporting the company was approximately $32 million USD in debit. Despite the downfall of A Bathing Ape, NIGO (founder) will remain on board as the creative director for at least the next two years. It’s kind of hard to believe the brand was in such financial distress but with high end prices for mediocre stuff…the outcome was inevitable. RIP Bape.

Below is an excerpt about Bape’s final bath.

In Summer 2000 I came back to Tokyo to research the popular Ura-Harajuku street fashion brand A Bathing Ape for my senior thesis. My makeshift mentor was an editor of Hot Dog Press — a men’s lifestyle magazine from Kodansha that ceased publication in 2003 — who had covered the Fujiwara Hiroshi family of brands over the years.

One day he drew a triangle on a piece of paper with the x-axis being number of consumers and the y-axis being brand cachet. He explained, “At the top point here are very cool but low-selling brands. At the bottom of the triangle are all the mass market brands with huge sales but no cachet. The secret to A Bathing Ape and the Ura-Harajuku brands is that they keep themselves right in the middle of the triangle and don’t let themselves slip down. They have a healthy number of consumers but they make sure to never go all the way to the bottom.”

This was the general understanding about A Bathing Ape’s success: They would always use specific marketing techniques to appear underground even when selling to millions of young Japanese across the country. I understood this “brand cachet über alles” strategy to be so integral to their success that I ended my thesis with the prediction, “Once the Ura-Harajuku cultural complex disintegrates, Ape may lose its subcultural base and will be subject to the normal forces of fad market structures. [Founder] Nigo will probably stop producing Ape before this point in order to save the brand’s reputation.”

How wrong I was.

Within a year of writing that overly-confident forecast of Nigo’s future fate, the brand embarked on an extremely conspicuous tie-up campaign with soda maker Pepsi. Bape then quickly dropped all of its previously-important artificial brand barriers to mass market appeal and tried to win over anybody and everybody. When I moved back to Japan in 2003, things looked pretty grim for A Bathing Ape: The Tokyo stores were empty during weekdays, and the only consumers seemed to be the high school kids who came into the big city on weekends.

The brand hit their second wind, however, when Nigo met Pharrell Williams, and for about three years in the mid-2000s, Bape became one of the hottest brands on earth — this time framed as an integral part of the American hip hop scene. Nigo made one of the least plausible yet most accepted visual transformations in recent history, dropping the Cornelius-lookalike routine to slot in gold teeth and wayward baseball caps (or worse, a skull cap).

Despite this international expansion, Bape’s days at the top of the Japanese brand hierarchy were long over. The Ape head had become too ubiquitous, and the brand was spread way too thin. When the U.S. bubble for Bape burst around 2008, parent company Nowhere started heading towards serious financial insolvency. Now we have learned that Nowhere — A Bathing Ape’s parent company — had been suffering massive losses. The Wall Street Journal states that fiscal year 2009 ended with ¥267.4 million and 2010 ended with ¥119 million in the red. Nowhere also has debt in the range of ¥2.6 billion.

In 2001, we believed that A Bathing Ape had mastered the dynamics of the brand life-cycle pyramid so that it would never fall prey to the dangers of becoming too mass market and seeing their consumer base quickly dry up. But with the changes in 2002, the brand went on an expansion spree that could rival Uniqlo. There were Busy Work Shops in every single major and minor regional city from Kyushu to Hokkaido despite declining demand. At some point Nigo established a Bape-themed hair salon, a restaurant, an art gallery, shops for his secondary lines like Bape Kids and Baby Milo. Meanwhile they were so desperate for consumers that Nigo stopped any sort of passing attempt to be cool. Most famously, Nigo made $15 yellow Ape-head T-shirts for Nippon Television’s charity telethon 24 Hour TV in 2007, which could often be seen on the backs of housewives and elementary school kids.

In 2009 Nigo — seemingly bored with his crumbling empire — stepped down as CEO of his own company, giving the reigns to an ex-World executive. (Perhaps not so coincidentally World also bought up former Ura-Harajuku brand Real Mad Hectic.) Nigo lately has been working on not particularly significant side projects such as “Human Made” and suit brand “Mr.Bathing Ape.” Meanwhile things were not looking good for Nowhere post-Nigo: the L.A. store closed in 2010.

Bape did, however, have one remaining ace in the pocket: massive support from consumers in Greater China especially Hong Kong and Taiwan. Hong Kong in particular had always been attracted to the Fujiwara Hiroshi empire of Japanese street brands, and since 1999, HKers had been intimately familiar with A Bathing Ape. That year Nigo teamed up with locals Eric Kot and Jan Lamb to open an Ape boutique on the 17th floor of an office building. The result was the most draconian shopping policy in Ape history. Potential shoppers had to apply to become Busy Work Shop members, which required a Hong Kong passport. This excluded all non-Hong Kong residents from using the shop. Moreover the applications would be sent to Japan for ultimate approval. Once customers were approved as members, they would have to make an appointment before being able to enter the store — no casual walk-ins allowed. The image, however strict, matched perfectly with the super-exclusivity of the original Japanese strategy.

Although the first Busy Work Shop Hong Kong was never a huge phenomenon in itself, the brand’s sudden presence in the Chinese language media put A Bathing Ape in the wider Asian pantheon of hot labels. The Baby Milo shirts in particular were a huge sensation in Hong Kong, making the evening news as a noteworthy youth trend. While Japanese lost interest, the rise of a new youth consumer in East Asia balanced things out for brands. Anecdotally-speaking, most shoppers I have seen inside or near A Bathing Ape in Harajuku have appeared to be from Greater China. Nigo has also directly targeted fans in these locations with a Taipei store in 2005 and an enormous new store in Hong Kong in 2006. Beijing and Shanghai opened in 2010.

So if Nigo’s 18-year old pet ape is being primarily consumed by the Chinese in its old age, it only makes sense that a Hong Kong based company — I.T Ltd. — would buy out the whole thing (including the debt). The depressing detail was the 90% equity purchase only cost the acquirers $2.8 million. Nigo has easily put more than that in his art, toy, and vintage LV trunk collection alone. This sell off of A Bathing Ape is an incredibly dramatic flame out for a company that defined the potential of Japanese independent brands to go abroad and changed the face of global fashion. It’s better than bankruptcy but not exactly a feel good denouement to an otherwise remarkable success story.

But just as Japanese apparel companies like Onward and Renown bought up heritage Anglo brands like J. Press and Aquascutum in the ’80s and ’90s, Chinese companies are likely to be the future bulk purchasers of Japanese brands. The Japanese fashion ecosystem relies more and more on the flow of East Asian cash, and the desperate fire sale of Nowhere is likely the opening paragraph to an entirely new chapter of Japanese cultural history.

Black Scale L.A. owner “Mega”, gives us a little insight into what it takes to build a successful brand in today’s market. From his early days at HUF, Mega absorbed the process of developing and maintaining a successful operation – from the design room to production.

California brand Transparent Systems sparked our interest recently with fun tee-shirt design work, and of course a “Wolf” tee that has all the guys in the den wanting a piece of that rainbow goodness.

We had the opportunity to ask designer/owner of Transparent Systems, Rainbow Alexander her inspirations on the new collection…

“This season’s line was inspired by encounters that both myself and my business partner experience daily, but my biggest inspirations come from things I have a serious in depth passion for. Our “Fuck Love” shirt came from all the feelings that are usually experienced when falling in or out of love, that’s why in the middle finger you can read words like passion and infatuation and the falling out of love is represented with the middle finger itself.

Our Wolf and Owl were inspired by my Native American culture. I come from the Colville tribe where these animals are looked upon as strong and honorable.

Everything in this new line has some meaning behind it, kind of like poetry on a shirt. Whether you’re just hanging around the house or going out with your friends, TS has something for everyone.”

Alright Stussy now I’m diggin this! For a minute there I was a bit worried, been sometime since you’ve come out with a collection that’s an instant eye catcher. This collaborative with Japanese fashion brand NEIGHBORHOOD for the second installment of Boneyards, entitled “Conspiracy”, definitely has my attention. Inspired by my beloved hometown (aka barrio) of East L.A.’s motorcycle clubs circa 50′s-70′s. I hope you did your homework because L.A. was and still is filled with Mongols who have always been extremely “Hard in the yard!” Hahaha, enough history lessons – let’s get back to the fashion aspect shall we?

The Boneyards II: Conspiracy includes a limited edition Levi’s trucker jacket and signature NEIGHBORHOOD denimology. Here’s a bit of goodness for all you city runners. You “Avatar” trail runners, you know who you are… This Fall Nike and Jun Takahashi, founder and head designer of Japan’s coveted clothing label Undercover, collaborate in the form of running product entitled ‘GYAKUSOU INTERNATIONAL RUNNING ASSOCIATION’.

“The design partnership fuses cutting edge Nike running innovations and design with the functionality of Takahashi’s Undercover—whose dedication to a less-but-better design philosophy mirrors Nike founder Bill Bowerman’s passion for the athletic benefits of minimalism. It amplifies levels of technical precision and intuitive function, delivering a unique and modern perspective on running by runners.

Gyakusou takes its name from a small but highly dedicated group of Tokyo-based runners – including Takahashi – who passionately run in their city. The name Gyakusou comes from ‘gyaku’ meaning wrong way or reverse and ‘sou’ meaning ‘run or running’ — a reference to the group running counter-clockwise while the rest of Tokyo’s runners run clockwise in the city’s parks. It draws upon a shared obsession for design innovation and improving the performance of the athlete.

With concealed specially developed pockets added to staple pieces like shirts, pants and shorts, a technical approach is sustained throughout. Total articulation and storage solutions were paramount during the design process. Carrying day-to-day essentials in silence is an integral part of Takahashi’s needs as a runner, ensuring his run remains a mobile personal space where he can concentrate, unwind and continually achieve.

Fabrics remain quiet, while keys and coins are kept from contact — one of the designer’s main concerns, “I was using every pocket my pant had. Now with this pocket system, you can put things in with order without making noise. I think that will help the regular runner.”

For the inaugural Fall/Holiday 10 collection, Nike and Takahashi also focused on colors. Wanting to provide an alternative to traditional running neons and brights, the result sees subtle colors that Takahashi describes “reflect a harmony with nature” fused with reflective safety details and a recurring red trim inspired by the artery vein — part of performance’s physical foundations.”

The Gyakusou performance running collection will be available this October at selected retailers globally.

Converse, Jumpman, and Nike Basketball are all partnering to present the inaugural World Basketball Festival – where recording artist JAY-Z will take the stage at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Thursday August 12, 2010, following an on-court showcase featuring finalists for the 2010 USA Basketball World Championship Team.

JAY-Z also collaborated with Nike to create an limited collection of Air Force Ones – the All Black Everything collection inspired by the World Basketball Festival. Nike has donated the shoes to the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation who in turn have linked up with eBay on a charity auction that begins on August 12th at www.ebay.com/jayznikewbf.
