Stumbled across this great video earlier that made me smile and has me sitting in anticipation to listen to the track and hopefully get the opportunity to watch the film. Big time musical talent (DJ/Producer/Jack of all trades) Mark Ronson has recently been spotted spending a significant amount of time with men and women Olympians capturing sounds from each athletes hop, skip, and a jump in order to produce a soundtrack for the 2012 London Olympics. Being that the process of allocating such sounds & creativity is fascinating for all that catch a glimpse, a film directed by Kim Gehrig entitled, “Beat 2012″ will accompany the music.

PRISM is pleased to present Miss You, an exhibition of new paintings and sculptures within an immersive installation by famed Brazilian artists Os Gemeos. In Miss You, Os Gemeos plays with fantastical notions of magical realism. It is a visual exploration of the Twins’ interest in life’s natural magic, its dreams, sentiments, surrealism, realizations, relationships, love, hate and ultimately underlines their intrinsic curiosity to question everything around them. Through their visual language, Os Gemeos creates a beautiful universe populated with their iconic characters and introduces the viewer into a vibrant world of imagination that stems from their subconscious.

For this exhibition, Os Gemeos takes the viewer through a labyrinth of visual language fashioned from the artists’ minds. Upon entering the exhibition, the viewer is transported into an alternate world filled with color, light and sound. While each work reverberates individually, together they expand through a range of pictorial styles and concepts. In Do Outro Lada Da Lua (The Other Side of the Moon), 2012, the Twins incorporate stripes, opposing colors and perspective tropes to give the optical illusion that their signature yellow character is trapped in a falling position. Miss You asks the viewer to let go, to be naïve, to resist reality, if only for a moment, and accept a world where dreams and imagination are allowed to flourish.

In 2008, MICHEL GONDRY‘s , Be Kind Rewind, introduced the idea of a “Sweded” movie. The idea is to remake a movie with your fiends using only what’s available to you. Since then, Youtube has thousand of these “sweded” videos. The creative ways used to re-create the big budget films is where the “sweded” films get all of their charm.

Here’s Jack Black and Michel Gondry explaining it better than I did.

Recently, at the French premiere of Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, a 2-minute “Sweded” version of Taxi Driver, created and starring Gondry, was played for audiences before the film began.

Back in July, Shepard Fairey and the Obey Crew ventured into Copenhagen. What started as a peaceful global mission, turned into something completely different, gnarly at times! This 4 part video series chronicles their time there. While ultimately it all worked out for the best, this particular adventure demonstrates how tough it is to go into another country and blend in when you are clearly out of your element. Even tougher when you go as an artist attempting to create a global peace message in a city torn by war & anger.  Art, commerce, punk rock DIY ethos and politics all clash in this miniseries. The video series delivers a pretty powerful message. Sometimes you have to take a good ass kicking for the love of your art. Enjoy!

“Keep rockin in the semi free world” -Shepard Fairey 

EVERYNONE released a new short today, “Losers”, and, as usual, with their combination of cleverly edited images, brilliant sound design and KEITH KENNIFF‘s ethereal score, they’re able to to shed light on the subject of bullying and produce an emotional response from the viewers. This video reminds me of Museum of Tolerance here in L.A. When I was young, I went there on a field trip and inside was a hallway that you walked through, “The Hall of Insults”, and in there you would hear racial slurs and other insults. Both, the video and the hallway, bring you face to face with how those types of words and actions can hurt others.

That was heavy. So, here is the previous short that they released called, ‘Laughter”, and now I know it’s contagious because I laughed all the way through this one.

Here’s a lesson in 3D movie making for your viewing pleasure. Why do we care about this topic you might ask? Well my friends, most of the big box office movies these days are shot with this particular framework in mind, more importantly the coolest movies are the ones with the limitless budgets for film making.

Being a huge fan of the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy this particular video really sparked my interest because it is a rare find behind the scenes making of Peter Jackson’s newest installment;  ”The Hobbit”. Not only do we get to see this rare goodness, but in this video Peter Jackson also shows us his stereoscopic work for the film. Enjoy!

What a commute this morning! I saw a gnarly accident on the highway on the way to the office, had me really buggin. Some poor bastards day – heck life just changed! Not sure why the emotion, probably because a personal experience buried deep down inside me – or it’s probably just one of those random feelings. Burn studios ambassador and man what houses Plastikman, Richie Hawtin, collaborated with the equally legendary Anish Kapoor in Paris earlier this year, resulting in a visual and sound installation that was, quite honestly, kind of mind blowing.

Anybody who has ever done graffiti quickly learns to appreciate the value of a “LANDMARK” -that is, the struggle to get your work to last anywhere in the street. Here in LA if you can get something to run for more than a month it is a achievement worthy of celebration. In London it is possibly more so since the buff is vigilant and very well-funded. One of the “Golden rules” in graffiti is to respect your elders; foremost by not going over them… Particularly in the extremely rare scenario where something has lasted nearly 3 decades(the graffiti equivalent to a UFO sighting) -I would assume Banksy would be aware of this rule, and respect it considering his roots lie in traditional graffiti… Apparently not.

I first came across this story via 12ozPROPHETS twitter, courtesy of MARE139′s blog on 12oz… It seems the story has been removed from there site for some reason. Thats why i am posting it here.

Banksy here went over a “ROBBO” piece, Robbo was a pioneer of london graffiti in the mid-80′s and he painted this piece in the Regents canal in Camden in 1985. Somehow this piece had managed to stay up all of these last 25 years… That was until Banksy decided to go over it.

“SABER was already a fixture in the Los Angeles graffiti scene by 1997 when he completed the largest graffiti piece ever created. His piece on the sloping cement bank of the Los Angeles River was nearly the size of a professional football field, and took 97 gallons of paint and 35 nights to complete. In a famous photograph—taken by his father just after it was finished—SABER stands on the piece and appears as a tiny speck amid a giant blaze of color. It catapulted SABER to legend status in the graffiti world.”

Launching later this month, OHWOW Gallery (Los Angeles) is set to host “Post 9-11″, a group exhibition featuring the works of nine New York artists that include Dan Colen, Terence Koh, Hanna Liden, Nate Lowman, Adam McEwen, Ryan McGinley, Agathe Snow, Dash Snow and Aaron Young. Not focusing on a particular movement or style, this show references a collective history of this past decade. The pain, struggle and triumph of modern time portrayed through an array of mediums such as; paintings, photography, sculptures and installations. “Post 9-11″ is scheduled to run from June 30 through August 27, 2011.

Their relationships with each other cemented fully over the last ten years – a decade spent sharing ideas, studios, apartments, and themselves. This intimate connection not only informed their respective practices, it also influenced their creative progressions. The loose society of downtown New York provides affirmation that the bond created making art together proved a powerful factor in the voice and vision of these artists.

Creating imagery, which at times expressed a rebellious spirit and freedom, also responds to their experience of these ten tumultuous years. The Post 9-11 artists’ work runs the gamut: defiant, irreverent and destructive; sublime, utopian, and filled with emotion. Two former studio mates and roommates, Dan Colen and Ryan McGinley exhibit the polarity. A painting of tar and feathers adhered to canvas by Dan Colen, Blop!, 2011, appears chaotic and abject. It references the barbaric and archaic act of punishment and interjects a strong sense of materiality with the use of unconventional media. Conversely, Ryan McGinley’s photograph, Tom (Golden Tunnel), 2010, is a surreal and cinematically arranged image of a nude, male figure in a train tunnel. It is as transcendent in its ethereal treatment as it is existential in its choreography and open-ended narrative.

Living in a big city, rarely do I get any opportunity to actually see the stars with my own two eyes – without the help of The Griffith Observatory. Don’t get me wrong that place rocks, but I hate the thought of being rushed by some snot nose brat on a school field trip for his turn at the stars. Whenever I reflect on The Creation and attempt to simplify my life when all the troubles of the world way down on my shoulders, I do my best to take my time and just listen to my inner thoughts guiding my next move. This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.
Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (bit.ly/​g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.

Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending…

Circus posters are all about mindboggling acrobatics, raw entertainment and the suspension of disbelief. And like street art, they elicit the reactions of onlookers, drawing them into alternative worlds and stretching their imagination.

SAFEWALLS celebrates the roots of Cirque du Soleil—the street—as well as the creative freedom and raw energy associated with street arts by pairing up with artists all over the world to create art posters inspired by its shows. These art posters will be exhibited around the world on a 12-month tour. Safewalls will also develop limited edition and open edition prints of the works, available for sale via its networks.

This month, April, the destination is Madrid, the capital — and largest city — of Spain. The trio of Spanish artists they’ve selected to create original an alternative poster designs for the Cirque de Soleil show Corteo is Miss Van, Nuria Mora and Ricardo Cavolo.

Born in 1973 in Toulouse, France, MISS VAN took to graffiti at the age of 18 and in the early ’90s, alongside her fellow Toulousaines Mademoiselle Kat and Fafi, pioneered an explicitly feminine voice in an artform often dominated by macho males. Graduating to gallery artist, Miss Van has exhibited works at the Schwaz city gallery in Austria, the Baltic Art Center in the U.K. and the Von der Heydt Museum’s Kunsthalle in Germany, and has shared wall space at shows with Os Gemeos, Banksy, Faile, Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Ryan McGinness and Takashi Murakami. In recent years she relocated to Barcelona, Spain, where she designs prints for Fornarina.

Madrid’s NURIA MORA takes a very distinctive and immediately identifiable approach to street art, leaving aside the lettering and cartoon characters so common in graffiti in favour of an entirely abstract style devoted to colour, geometry and crisp, straight-edged forms. Her solo shows include stops in London, Tokyo and at the Espace Beaurepaire in Paris, while joint shows with her frequent collaborator, fellow Spanish graffiti hand Eltono, have numbered two dozen. Beyond the galleries, Mora has also created murals and artworks in public spaces throughout southern Europe, in Egypt, in the favelas of Brazil and shantytowns of Johannesburg, South Africa.

A freelance illustrator rather than a street artist, Madrid’s RICARDO CAVOLO — born in 1982 in Salamanca, Spain — specializes in an endearingly simple, though hardly naïve, drawing style that doesn’t shy away from dramatic colours. Whether he’s illustrating a Charles Dickens children’s book, designing record sleeves for the Gran Derby label or paying tribute to Russian tattoos on T-shirts for Phucisme, CAVOLO crafts images that recall classic comic books, advertising art and, more than anything, lively folk art from across the globe. The circus is a particularly favoured theme for him, as is apparent with one glance at his CORTEO design for SAFEWALLS.

From the brain of Quentin Dupieux (Nonfilm, Steak) A.K.A. Mr. Oizo comes his second film, RUBBER. An experiment in the nonsensical about a killer tire destroying everything in his path backed by a soundtrack provided by Mr. Oizo himself and Gaspard Augé of Justice.

You can watch it “on demand” through a grip of different content providers but if you want to see it on a big screen Angelinos can catch it starting April 1^st at the Nuart in West Hollywood. Other states, here are more dates.

MADE sat with legendary photographer David LaChapelle during his stay in Berlin for their latest episode (if you might say) of the Visions of Visionaries series. The interview goes into the rise of this brilliant creative. His mind set at the height of his career, inspirations, and the sudden resignation of the commercial magazine world a couple of years back. Since giving up “the fast life” and becoming a farmer on the island of Hawaii, David’s attitude and aura seems to be so much more calm and balanced. Just normal. No diva attitude, no superficial party mood.

An inspiring and humbling interview to say the least. Enjoy!

“My ‘Little People Project’ started in 2006. It involves the remodelling and painting of miniature model train set characters, which I then place and leave on the street. It is both a street art installation project and a photography project. The street-based side of my work plays with the notion of surprise and I aim to encourage city-dwellers to be more aware of their surroundings. The scenes I set up, more evident through the photography, and the titles I give these scenes aim to reflect the loneliness and melancholy of living in a big city, almost being lost and overwhelmed. But underneath this, there is always some humour. I want people to be able to empathise with the tiny people in my works.”

What do you feel like doing today?

A question we often ask ourselves as a day commences. Whether school, work, or leisure – What we feel like doing today, is often not what the great responsibilities of life permit at that particular moment.

I personally feel like climbing a mountain today, screaming “FREEEEEEDOM!” from the top of my lungs as I reach the summit. I blink, and I’m back in my office looking out the window towards the mountains I was just climbing. Sooner or later we all discover that we are the master-gardeners of the soul, the directors of our lives.

This brilliant short by Los Angeles Student Director, Armen Perian portrays a modern day reenactment of a timeless quote from Soren Kierkegaard; A precursor of modern existentialism, a scholar that insisted on the need for individual decision and leaps of faith in the search for religious truth, thereby contradicting Protestant rationalist theology of his time.

DJ BUSRIDER, DJ MR. WONDERFUL

Stumbled upon this bit of goodness just before the New Year celebrations begin.

Artist  Crocheted Olek (AKA Polish-born, NYC-based Agata Olek), who just completed her latest work, the complete crocheting of Wall Street’s Charging Bull (shown above). The installation lasted two hours before it was taken down.

It was truly a year of guerrilla actions that opened a new path in my crocheted investigations.
I started it with a bike and ended up with the Charging Bull as a Christmas gift to NYC and a tribute to the sculptor of the bull, Arturo di Modica, who in another guerrilla act, placed the bull on Wall Street in Christmas of 1987 as a symbol of the “strength and power of the American people” following the 1987 Stock Market crash.

This crocheted cover represents my best wishes to all of us.  It will be a great, prosperous year with many wonderful surprises!!!

I’ve never had the opportunity to check out one of these crocheted bikes until about a month ago while strolling to one of my DJ residency’s in Santa Monica (3rd Street Promenade).

People often wonder what kind of below the radar shit really goes down across the Country. Things like; undocumented, exclusive events, secret societies, conspiracies – you name it. It doesn’t help that Hollywood Blockbusters often spark this universal conspiracy theory way of thinking too. An unbelievably brilliant hidden gem of a gallery built on secrecy, has recently been discovered (yet entrance for art collectors and viewers is nearly impossible)…

In 2009 a secret project called “The Underbelly Project” began four stories beneath New York’s crust. A 100 year old massive subway station has sat unfinished, uninhabited, and until now – undiscovered. Over the course of a year, artists from across the globe have been secretly escorted down into the station to leave their mark on this “Holy Grail” of Street Art.

Set free for one full night, this all star cast of artist got a once in a lifetime shopping spree of fresh untouched canvas. Imagine the freedom? No cell phones, emails, or business calls – just lengthy, undocumented “Underearth” street art sessions.

In the weeks since, almost no one has seen the show. The gallery, whose existence has been a closely guarded secret, closed on the same night it opened.

“Abandoned stations like this — and there are a fair number of them in the city — are irresistible to those who search out hidden spaces in the city, despite or perhaps because of the fact that being there is illegal and potentially dangerous.”

Exploring the laws of motion that govern all living things…on canvas.

“Kinesis” describes the activity of an organism in response to a stimuli. In science, it shows how environment informs movement. In art, it brings raw truth to the reactions and responses of living things.

Faced with this crux of existence, these Bay Area artists roll up their sleeves: In the sultry portraits of Eric Bailey, the female form takes on gestures that are at once natural and modern, organic and sophisticated. Peggy Gyulai’s abstract works render the motion and shape of music onto canvas in active, bold strokes and cool chromatic hues. The figurative nudes of Fernando Reyes are an elegant and provocative exhibition of bodies in motion.

From the unseen causes for a woman’s expression, to the effects that music has on the motion of a brush stroke, to the forces that act upon the human body, each work represents varying states of kinesis in artful and intoxicating detail.

Graffiti artist Banksy storyboarded and directed the opening sequence of The Simpsons Sunday night (aka the “couch gag“). The most controversial intro to date – demonstrates a devastating take on commercialism, merchandising, and 20th Century Fox. It’s definitely the most ballsy opening for the show that I have ever seen in my 21 years of watching the show. Check out a history of every couch gag up until this year.

How did you find Banksy to do this, and now that it’s done, how much trouble are you in?

Well, I haven’t been fired yet, so that’s a good sign. I saw the film Banksy directed, “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” and I thought, oh, we should see if he would do a main title for the show, a couch gag. So I asked Bonnie Pietila, our casting director, if she could locate him, because she had previously located people like Thomas Pynchon. And she did it through the producers of that film. We didn’t have any agenda. We said, “We’d like to see if you would do a couch gag.” So he sent back boards for pretty much what you saw.

Were you concerned that what he sent you could get the show into hot water?

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about it for a little bit. Certainly, Fox has been very gracious about us biting the hand that feeds us, but I showed it to Matt Groening, and he said, no, we should go for it and try to do it pretty much as close as we can to his original intention. So we did. Like we always do, every show is submitted to broadcast standards, and they had a couple of [changes] which I agreed with, for taste. But 95 percent of it is just the way he wanted.

Can you say what got cut out?

I’ll just say, it was even a little sadder. But I would have to say almost all of it stayed in. We were thrilled. It was funny, I watched “Mad Men” last night and I wondered if this was my Don Draper letter to The New York Times. I knew just how he felt. But it was great to have a secret.

One of the things Banksy is known for is disguising his identity. How can you be sure that you were dealing with the real him?

The original boards that we got from him were in his style and were certainly by an extremely proficient artist. We were dealing with the person that represented him making the movie. I haven’t met him, I don’t even know what he looks like, except what the Internet suggests. And he’s taken credit for it now so I’m pretty sure it’s him. We went through the people that made the movie so I assume they would know how to get to the real him.

Even compared to how “The Simpsons” has mocked Fox in the past, this seemed to push things to a different level. Are you sure there’s no one higher up than you on the corporate ladder who’s displeased with this?

I think that we should always be able to say the holes in our DVDs are poked by unhappy unicorns.

Has Banksy’s criticism made you reconsider any of the ways you do things at “The Simpsons” in terms of producing the show or its merchandise?

I have to say, it’s very fanciful, far-fetched. None of the things he depicts are true. That statement should be self-evident, but I will emphatically state it.

A lot of the show’s animation is produced in South Korea, but not under those conditions.

No, absolutely not.

And even that closing shot of the 20th Century Fox logo surrounded in barbed wire?

Approved by them. Obviously, the animation to do this was pricey. I couldn’t have just snuck it by Fox. I’ll just say it’s a place where edgy comedy can really thrive, as long as it’s funny, which I think this was. None of it’s personal. This is what made “The Simpsons” what it is.

Bay area graphic designer turned custom furniture designer, Mr Chris Brigham is fulfilling one of his lifelong dreams (outside of being a father, congrats on the little one on the way Chris by the way). On a recent trip to a buddy’s place in San Francisco he noticed a void in bike management when it comes to housing ones bike in an apartment or loft of some sort. He decided to take matters into his own hands and invent something that can probably pay for his soon to be newborn’s college education, CASH!

Bike Shelf, made from solid wood (in this case, Walnut) and suspended by a solid steel square rod mount, this shelf can hold both your bike, as well as anything else you want on it quite easily. If you want to just showcase your bike, that’s fine, but if you want to utilize the space for books, flowers, bike accessories, etc., that’s what it’s there for.

RETNA and El MAC recently collaborated on yet another mural. Their newest mural, titled Of Our Youth, can be seen on the side of Graphaids Art Supply Store, on La Cienega in Los Angeles is the subject of this new video.

The imagery and text used in this mural was inspired by their time spent at Skid Row, while painting their previous mural. The artists met a man by the name of Ralph Woodruff aka Chato and were inspired by his past hardships, experiences, and overall outlook on life. His ability to recognize past mistakes was something that resonated with RETNA.

The text which reads, “So today I’m trying to change a few things to rectify the situation of my past. So today I’m looking towards the future (of our youth highlighted)” is a quote taken from their conversation.

Do you ever wake up thinking that you’re going to create something out of nothing today so help you God? That’s how I woke up this morning. I don’t know what it is yet but I know I’m going to get it done or else the day just wont seem that fulfilling. Don’t get me wrong, we are smack dead in the middle of several campaigns and projects for the Newestra Design portion of the business. The Electro Wars captures the perspective of the electro scene as told through the eyes and ears of the artists that are helping to define it. The film features unique footage right from the frontlines and includes in depth interviews with artists such as A-Trak, Moby, Justice, Boys Noize, Spank Rock, Diplo & Switch, Franki Chan, DJ Premier, Midnight Juggernauts and many more.

We been following this for sometime now, looking forward to what was made of all that crazy electro road footage Vasquez compiled. Listening to the philosophies on electronic music from the mouths of artist’s that make it. What is Blog House? This should be fun and interesting, to say the least. I’m quite sure you’ll be hearing bangers the whole movie too! Indie documentaries rock, no boundaries. I think they’re about to awaken a sleeping giant, you heard it here first yo!

Our guilty pleasure Lindsay Lohan is soon set to turn herself in for a 90-day jail sentence for violating her probation, our mates at Complex magazine looking to get one last good spread in before she’s tainted by manly woman in the “pokey” – recently revealed that the actress will cover the next issue of the magazine.

The mag contacted New York-based artist/designer KAWS, who’s limited edition vinyl toys are among the “best of the best” in the art toy-collecting community, for the creatives for Lohan’s feature spread in the mag for their 2010 Style & Design Issue.

“We’re about to remind people that they’ve been underestimating Lindsay. We’re about to ride out together, Bonnie and Clyde style. But some funny things happened on the way to making magic—and they reminded us that Lilo’s not lost, she’s just trying to hide from the vultures”…

There was supposed to be an interview to coincide with the spread, but Lindsay disappeared and Complex was unable to track her down…

We know where she is…. Hehehehehe

Presented is a first look at the Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket figures coming soon from Medicom, Kaws and Disney. They  were previewed at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut as part of a Kaws retrospective show and are expected to drop sometime in 2010, hell they might be ready to drop it at ComicCon 2010. There are only two people I know from Pittsburgh, Wiz Khalifa and Cliff Maynard. What do these seemingly unrelated people have in common? A love for chronic. Cliff is the 38 year old mastermind behind what he calls Chronic Art. Each piece is made from little bits of unrolled roach paper, that would otherwise thrown away, then each is cut into delicate shapes and arranged together in such a ways as seen. Extending from Jesus to Snoop, the outcomes are really dope!

All right the super (down low) geek in us can’t wait for the holidays to come any sooner. Sorry Summer but this year belongs to Tron yo. We probably wouldn’t be as hyped as we are, granted Daft Punk wasn’t producing the Soundtrack. But they are, and that probably means touring. And when there is touring there shall be shows, and where there are shows – you will probably find me there all faded shooting fotos. God, I want to shoot DF Live…..

Our brethren over at HypeBeast recently produced a remarkable video on Martha Cooper – the Godmother of Graffiti and Hip-Hop. Last month, Martha Cooper debuted her newest publication “Name Tagging” at the OBEY Pop-Up Shop NYC. In this video she addresses the notion of tagging on corporate name tags and Federal mail post its – and how this form of graffiti is just as beautiful an art form as bombing on trains.

Martha Cooper also dives into her contributions to Hip-Hop and Graffiti and the importance of her early day photography in the genres’ – and the difficulties photographers today face.
