Coachella’s line up this year is nothing short of phenomenal and though I usually avoid the festival due to the heat alone, I think this year it’s time to break out the shades and sun block and watch my favorite bands put it down. MGMT, La Roux, Miike Snow, and Phoenix at the same festival! Phoenix taking a Grammy home on Sunday night was the most well deserved award IMO even though many would argue they are not an alternative rock band.
Phoenix is a French band that consists of four members (Thomas Mars, Deck D’Arcy, Christian Mazzalai and Laurent Brancowitz) that formed in 1996. One of the members, Laurent Brancowitz, was previously in a band called Darlin’ he earlier formed with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, who eventually became Daft Punk. Their sound is more than just vocals over synths, which is growing more and more popular here in the states. I don’t know if there is one category they would fall in but I’m sure you’ll agree this band can grab their listeners and leave you with that weird happy feeling like when you’re stuck in Southern Cali traffic and the right song comes on and you realize life is great cause for the next 3 to 4 minutes or so your ears are being blessed with something plain and simply amazing.
